LGBTQ Birth: Tending to the Digital Mycelium of Queer and Trans Birthwork

Katie and Emma O’Brien will be speaking at the Reproductive Futurism online gathering about their work building community through their project LGBTQ Birth.

LGBTQ Birth is a platform for reproductive education by and for the LGBTQ+ community started by Emma O’Brien (she/her) and Katie Byron (they/them). Emma is a white, queer full-spectrum doula and clinical herbalist. Katie is a white, queer, nonbinary full-spectrum doula and therapist. Katie and Emma live on Massachusett land (what is sometimes called Boston, MA).

As Covid-19 pushed many forms of reproductive support online, we wanted to tend to the mycelium of queer and trans reproductive support workers and families. We were interested in supporting queer and trans birth workers in creating and sharing online content as well as building online community. We currently offer support groups and a video directory of queer and trans perinatal workers. We are interested in providing more accessible educational content for queer and trans families and workers. We are particularly invested in supporting new and aspiring reproductive support workers, validating pathways to doing this work outside of large, mainstream training organizations, and affirming the knowledge the queer and trans people already have in supporting our communities.
